Album Review: Whatever by Ivan Beecroft

It’s shocking to think that '90s grunge and post-grunge will soon be considered classic rock. But, “times – they are a changing.” For whatever reasons, today’s rock is very different from that of yesteryear. Which is why we need artists like Ivan Beecroft, who give us new music with an old-school flair that is becoming increasingly difficult to find. The Australian “working class bloke who’s absolutely fed up with the status quo,” will be releasing his new album, Whatever, on November 9th, 2017.

Similar to Nirvana’s now iconic Nevermind (1991), the album will resonate with Generation X for its approachability, honesty, and directness. Preferring to do all of his own production, Beecroft’s Whatever comes across as raw, unpolished, and real. Whether or not that’s your cup of tea is entirely subjective. Objectively, Beecroft uses simple melodies coupled with direct lyrics to put out songs that are blunt in their content and unpolished in their delivery.

The 11-track album features songs like “Sleepwalker,” “Say It to My Face” and “You Can’t Take My Soul,” which evoke comparison to rock music signature of the '90s. “Got A Reputation” seems to be inspired by punk that emerged towards the tail end of the '80s, while “She Said,” “Believe,” “How Do You Sleep at Night,” “Lost Child” and “One Last Goodbye” seem to be a little more alternative. Finally, “Broken Wing” and “Ordinary Man” come across as the most expressive due to their contemplative lyrics.

Coming from a working class background, Ivan’s music is a reflection of his personal and professional journey. Inspired by the DIY mentality of famous bands from the wrong side of the tracks – think Sex Pistols and Joy Division – Beecroft made the decision to produce his own music without the glitz and glamour often associated with bands nursed by today’s mainstream music industry. The creative freedom he experiences as a result allowed him to utilize his skills in whatever way he saw fit. In this sense, it’s a testament to his tenacity and motivation.
