Joel Phil is back with a new single called “Monster,” a follow up to his 2017 debut track, “Rise Up.” The song has a nice beat and interesting melody, seems to be a combination of influences, and much like its title suggests, is lyrically on the dark side. "I wrote this song out of frustration...and the end product was an emotional release!" states Phil. Growing up with limited resources that certainly impeded his ability to study music the way he wanted, he was still able to pursue his dreams, being supported by his family’s dedication and that of his local community in Brooklyn, New York.
Anyone raised in New York City can attest to the fact that it really is an absurdly large melting pot of cultures, ideas, and traditions. While the path of self-discovery is often not easy for young people, it can get that much more complicated when they are surrounded by some many influences. And yet, his Spanish and Dominican roots, along with all those he’s encountered along the way, have helped Phil find his voice. But, as a result of his upbringing, the theme of identity is one that he keep revisiting, as his understanding of what it means evolves with experience. Some of his artistic influences are Frank Sinatra, Amy Winehouse, and George Michael.
“Joel's latest release 'Monster' draws on a more serious and darker tone than the empowering ‘Raise Up,’ showing a completely different side to the artist.” The track starts with some electronic samples accompanied by piano, as Phil begins to sing: “I can’t take it any longer, I feel so numb. I can’t fake it, feel the monster in my blood.” Then, it erupts into an interesting melody complete with female backup vocals and pop music mixed with elements of dance and hip-hop. “The track was originally made for film Fifty Shades Freed with its running themes of intense lust, love and jealousy.“ It premiered on October 19th, 2018, and produced by Jorge A Holguin.
